Ulaszek Families  in South Chicago

There were many Ulaszek families in Chicago at the turn of the 20th century. They settled in two major neighborhoods that provided most of the employment for immigrants.  The first was the South Chicago neighborhood with its steel and related industries. The second neighborhood was the "Back of the Yards" and Bridgeport neighborhoods surrounding the meatpacking industry.

My great grandfather was Michal Ulasek who married Marianna Czarny, also from Osobnica, on 20 May 1895 in St. Michael's parish in South Chicago. Witnesses at this marriage were Frank Lesniak and Frances Kuchta, both common names from Osobnica.

Michael Ulaszek married Marianna Czarna from Osobnica on 20 May 1895 in St Michael's parish in South Chicago.

Michael Ulaszek and Marianna Czarna's children were:

  1. Jan Ulaszek (1897-1897)

  2. Anna Ulaszek (1898-1983) married Konstanty (Gus) Iwinski in 1924 in Chicago.

  3. Agnes (1900-1984), married Harry Orbik in 1924.

  4. Hedwig Ulaszek (1903-1903)

  5. Catherine (1905- ?), married Boleslaw (William) Pik in 1928 in Chicago.

The 1910 census also showed living at 8401 Ontario Avenue, John and Anna (Budziak) Ulaszek and their family. John Ulaszek was born in 1871. His parents were  Michal Ulaszek and Apolonia Łątka from Osobnica. John and Anna (Budziak) Ulaszek were married 8 August 1899 in Holy Cross Church in Joliet Illinois.

(There are two conflicting documents involved here. One is John's death certificate which lists his parents as Michael and Apolonia. Another man Martin Ulaszek, married in St. Mary of Perpetual Help parish, listed his parents as Michael and Apolonia Ontkow. Witness at that marriage were John Ulaszek and Peter Ladka. I believe the Onkow name was actually a misspelling of  Łątka, pronounced "Wowntka" in English. There was only one Michal and Apolonia in Osobnica and she was a Łątka).  John was a saloon keeper in the neighborhood. According to family stories, his bar was called "Gallaghers" by the locals because the actual name  "Galician" after the area they were from, was too difficult for English speakers to pronounce.

In 1920, John Ulaszek and Anna Budziak's children were:

  1. Walter Ulaszek, born 1900.

  2. Joseph Ulaszek, born 1903.

  3. Caroline Ulaszek, born 1906.

  4. Katherine Ulaszek, born 1908.

Michael Ulaszek worked for Illinois Steel as laborer. In 1900 Frank Ulaszek and his family was living at 8409 Ontario.

The 1910 census had Frank Ulaszek's family, his son Joseph Ulaszek's family, Michael Ulaszek's family and George Ulaszek ,a boarder,  all living in the same house at 8411 Ontario.

Joseph Ulaszek and Agatha Ulaszeks's children were:
