Polewski (Poleski) and Gajewski

It appears from the various records that these families used Polewski and Poleski interchangeably.

This family is connected to my line by a marriage on November 23, 1910 between Hipolit Pyterek, son of Alexander Pyterek and Helena Murkowska and Agnes Polewski, daughter of Antoni Polewski and Marianna Gajewska.

Antoni Polewski and Marianna Gajewski had the following children in Chicago after they immigrated in 1881:

  1. Stanislawa, born 10 April 1883 in St. Stanislaw Kostka parish in Chicago.Godparents were Adalbert Gajewski and Marianna Szolska. Stanislawa Polewska married Joseph Stazinski in Immaculate Conception parish on 20 Oct 1902.

  2. Salomea, born 15 Nov 1885 in St. Stanislaw Kostka parish in Chicago.

  3. Josepha, born 13 Mar 1888  in St. Stanislaw Kostka parish in Chicago. Godfather was Peter Gajewski. Josepha polewska married Franciszek Muszanowski in Immaculate Conception parish on 29 May 1906.

  4. Agnes, born 26 April 1890 in St. Stanislaw Kostka parish in Chicago. She married  Hipolit Pyterek, son of Alexander Pyterek and Helena Murkowska on November 23, 1910 in Immaculate Conception parish in South Chicago.

  5. Wladislawa, born 21 Feb 1892 in Immaculate Conception parish in South Chicago. She married Antoni Wolski on 12 Dec 1913 in Immaculate Conception parish.

  6. Joseph, born 1896 according to1900 US census.

  7. Szczepan, born 8 Dec 1895 in Immaculate Conception parish in South Chicago.

  8. Clara, born 2 Sep 1901 in Immaculate Conception parish in South Chicago.

  9. Antoni, born 20 Sep 1903 in Immaculate Conception parish in South Chicago.

  10. Angela, born 1899 according to 1900 US census.

Antoni Polewski

Antoni Polewski (24 1/2) married Marianna Gajewska (17) in the parish of Gora near Inowroclaw in 1880. Antoni was listed as being from Inowroclaw and Marianna was listed as being from Witow. Even though Antoni Polewski was listed in this document as being from Inowroclaw, he was not born in that parish.

Also married in Gora were:

1836 Mathias Poleski (32) and Marianna Kowalka

1869 Joseph Poleski (24) and Magdalena Malinska

1874 Jacob Polewski (25) and Victoria Kozlowska (22) from Niemojewo.

1876 Martin Polewski (24) and Agnes Poturalska (18) from Niemojewo.

1883 Wojciech Przekwas (19) and Stanislawa Polewska (28) from Niemojewo. One of the witnesses at this wedding was Joannes (Jan) Polewski.

In the nearby parish of Parchanie in1873 Adalbert (Wojciech) Poleski, widow, 37, son of Antoni Poleski and Agnes Musialkiewicz married Elizabeth Tyczkowska, widow, 26 from Modiborzyce, daughter of Martin Dutkiewicz and Franciszka Broniska.

It turns out that Antoni Polewski was born in another nearby parish of Piaski.

Antoni Polewski was born on 1 Jan 1855 to Joseph Polewski and Franciszka Wypijewska in the village of Skotniki in the parish of Piaski. Other Children include:

There was another Poleski family in this parish in the village of Wroble. Blasius Poleski and Marianna Kozlowska had these children there:

It is not 100% certain that Joseph Polewski who lived in Szkotniki and Balsius Poleski from Wroble were brothers. But they were both married in 1847 in Piaski parish and were listed one after the other in the parish book.

Joesph Poleski (24) married Franciszka Wypieska (29) on 22 Nov 1847.

Blasius Polewski, widow (31) married Marianna Koslowska, (15) on 26 Nov 1847.

It appears that after Antoni and Marianna (Gajewski) Polewski emigrated to Chicago in 1881, at least one of  his brothers continued to have children in the parish of Gora, where he was married. There is no evidence that either Jacob Polewski or Martin Polewski immigrated to the U.S.

Jacob Polewski and Viktoria Kozlowska had these children:

Antoni Polewski's father Joseph Polewski died on 29 Oct 1857 and left 3 living children Jacob (7), Martin (6) and Antoni (2). It appears that his wife Franciszka Wypijewska did not remarry.

There was also a Franciszek born 28 Oct 1867 to Joseph Polewski and Magdalena Malenowski in Lojewo.

5 Oct 1868 in the parish of Piaski, Joannes Piesecki (26) married Marianna Polewski (18).

There was another Polewski family in nearby Pakosc: Joseph Poleski (sometimes spelled Polewski) and Elizabeth:

Joannes Polewski, 35, son of Nicolas and Catherine Polewski, (both deceased), married Helena Wittich, 22, daughter of  Joseph and Veronica Wittich on 21 October 1862 in the village and parish of Pakosc. Joannes (Jan) was from Pakosc and Helena Wittich was from Rybitwy, in the parish of Koscielec.

Their children were born in Rybitwy, in the parish of Koscielec, near Inowroclaw and they settled in Chicago. Joannes (Jan) Poleski was listed as an auriga (driver) on his children's birth records.

  1. Alexander Polewski, son of Jan and Helen married Bronislawa Moczynska on Oct 25 1898 in Ss. Peter and Paul parish in Chicago. He was born Julian Alexander Poleski on 6 Feb 1877 in Rybitwy, in the parish of Koscielec, near Inowroclaw.

  2. Theodore Polewski, son of Jan and Helen married Francis Gajewska, daughter of Antoni and Agnes on 28 Sep 1904 in St. Mary of Perpetual Help in Chicago.

  3. Antoni Polewski, son of Jan and Helen married Martha Muszynski  on 21 Sep 1904 in St. Mary of Perpetual Help in Chicago. He was born on 20 April 1878 in Rybitwy, in the parish of Koscielec, near Inowroclaw.

  4. Marianna Polewski, daughter of Jan and Helen Witykow [sic] of Koscielec, Inowroclaw married Jan Tabanski in St. Stanislaw Kostka parish in Chicago on 14 Jul 1895. The marriage was also listed in St. Mary of Perpetual Help in Chicago. She was born on 24 Feb 1869 in Rybitwy, in the parish of Koscielec, near Inowroclaw.

  5. Franciszka Polewski married , daughter of Jan and Helen married Paul Baranaowski, son of Jan and Marianna on 29 April 1903 in St. Mary of Perpetual Help Church in Chicago. She was born in 1880 in the parish of Inowroclaw.

  6. Josepha Polewski, daughter of Jan and Helen, married Boleslaw Brylanski, son of Jan and Rozalia on 26 Nov 1895  in St. Mary of Perpetual Help Church in Chicago. She was born on 6 March 1867 in Rybitwy, in the parish of Koscielec, near Inowroclaw.

  7. Pelagia Poleski, born 7 Dec 1873 in Rybitwy, in the parish of Koscielec, near Inowroclaw. There is no trace of her and she may have died in her youth.

The 1900 US Census shows Jan Poleski, born in 1839, living with his wife Helen, born 1844 and his children Theodore (b 1876), Tony (b. 1879), and Francis (b.1880) on 819 31st Place in Chicago. They immigrated in 1891.

There was another Polewski marriage in the parish of Pakosc. On 26 December 1878 in Pakosc, Jacob Polewski, 22, son of Joannes Polewski and deceased mother, married Leokadia Biecker, 18, daughter of Jacob and Thell Beker.

So it is possible that Polewskis may originate in Pakosc.
