These units were Polonized over time and after Prussia's defeat by Napolean these units transitioned into the Polish 1st and 2nd Uhlan Regiments.

After liberation from Prussia the 2nd and 5th Polish Pułk Jazdy Lekkiej (Light cavalry) was garrisoned in the City of Augustów and its suburb of Zarnowo.

The third and final partition of Poland after the failed Kościuszko Uprising effectively wiped Poland off the map of Europe. This part of Poland fell under control of Prussia until liberated by Napolean in 1807 when it became the Duchy of Warsaw. From 1796 to 1802, Prussian Units were stationed in Augustów. LDS records have military parish registers of baptisms, marriages, deaths, and indexes for the 9th Husaren regiment of the old Prussian army.

The Towarczys Korp (Companions Korp) was garrisoned at Ostrołęka, Wyskowa, Knyszyn, Ostrów, Łomza, Tykoczyn, Drochocyn, Zabluddo, Brańsk, Bocky, etc.

A subunit of the Towarczys Korp, the Tatarenpulk (Tatar Regiment) aka 9th Bosnian Regiment, was garrisoned at Augustowo, Goniądz, Suchowola, Rajgród, Janówa, and Sokóka, etc. Members of both units show up in vital records of Augustów and Bargłów-Kościelny parishes.

In the Spring of 1815 to the Spring of 1816, the 4th Uhlan Regiment, veterans of the Battle of Samosierra in Spain under Napoleon, was stationed in Augustów, now under the command of Jan Kozietulski.

Army Units Stationed in and Around Augustów

Over the years various army units were stationed in Augustów and the surrounding areas. Men from Tajno and the surrounding villages often served in these units. This list is a compilation of information from historical documents, books, as well as information extracted from area parish records. These parish records often listed a person's social status as a retired soldier from "X" unit or a soldier on leave from "X" unit.

In 1826. during the building of the Augustów Kanal, the 8th Company of Rzemiełśników Wojskowych (Army Tradesmen) with 50 soldiers under the command of Aleksander Faliński.

In July 1827 from Zamość. arrived the 12th Company of Veterans under the command of Lieutenant Gąsowski.

After the fall of the November 1830 Polish Uprising, Russian Troops were regularly stationed in Augustów and the surrounding region.

In 1834, after the withdrawl of a regiment, from unit 9 of Disabled Veterans (Komendę Inwalidów 9) a unit of Area Internal Guards (Okręgu Straży Wewnętrznej) was formed in Augustów.

Sub-units and detachments of various line units were periodically stationed in the Augustów area:

• In 1834 and 1838, a battery of the 10th Artillery Brigade
• 1839, the 17th Cossack Regiment
• 1843, the 45th Cossack Regiment
• 1845, the 30th Cossack Regiment
• 1853, Skoła Fajerwerkiów (Ordnance School?) of the 1st Artillery Division and the staff of the 8th Regiment of Don Cossacks.
• In 1857, the number of soldiers from the Russian Army stationed in Augustów numbered 188. Two years later there were 341, and in 1862, 257 soldiers and 133 horses.
• 1860, 2nd battalion of the Niżegorodzki Infantry Regiment.
• 1862, Nowogieorgijewski Battalion of Internal Guards and 2nd Battalion of the Niżegorodzki Infantry Regiment

Discharged soldier from the 1st line Infantry Regiment, Czar’s Russian Army, Dymissywanego Zołnierza Pułku 1 Piechoty liniowy Wojsk Cesarsko Rossyiskich. (1)

 

"In 1849 the regiment at first remained in its previous locations but in April it left for the town of Kalisz, near to which it went into billets until July. From July onwards companies were deployed to various localities for guard duties. In the month of November the regiment moved to new quarters with the regimental staff going to Augustow and battalion headquarters to Suwalki, Raigorod, Rachki, and Filippovo. In 1850, after concentrating in camp near Suwalki, the regiment in August spread out with the regimental headquarters and the headquarters of the 4th Battalion moving to Suwalki and the other battalion headquarters going to Kalvaria, Vyshtinna, and Filippovo. In autumn of that same year the 1st and 2nd Battalions received new colors with Alexander Ribbons and the inscription "1700-1850", signifying the 150 years of the regiment’s existence. In May of the same year Colonel Yakov Ivanovich Trubnikov took over the regiment." 3

After the Uprising Augustów became a garrison for Russian Line troops.In the second half of 1867 these units were listed, the 11th Fanagorski Grenadier Regiment named General Suworow with the 3rd Grenadier Artillery Brigade later relieved by the 2nd Regiment of Don Cossacks named after General Sysojewa of the 2nd Cavalry Division. In 1888 there were 735 Cossacks.

By 1893, the systematic deterioration of German-Russian relations caused the Chief of Staff or the Wino Army District to shift additional units from Grodno to Augustów such as the Ustiużski Infantry Regiment in the name of Prince Bagration, of the 26th Infantry Division. In addition, several other sub units were stationed in the area. In 1893, the 2nd battalion of the 102nd Wiatski Infantry Regiment, the 3rd branch of the Wierzbołowski Boarder Guard Brigade. between 1897 and 1901, the Russian garrison numbered 3260 soldiers.

Most of the soldiers were recruited from distant provinces and took no interest in city life or of the fate of its inhabitants. But there foreign presence was felt and it worked against the peoples hope for independence. Even the Russified local government seemed foreign to the citizens.

The explosion of the January 1863 Uprising increased the activity of the Russian Army in the Kingdom of Poland. Augustów was a strategic point in the province as it was the narrowest part. Deployed here was the 2nd battalion of the 24th Symbirski Infantry Regiment and hundreds from the 36th Regiment of Don Cossacks as well as subunits of of the 23rd Niżowski Infantry Regiment and 10th Małorosyjski Infantry Regiment.
